FREIGHTLINER LLC -- The DaimlerChrysler AG (DCX) unit, headquartered in Portland, Ore., makes and sells commercial vehicles throughout Classes 3-8. It is the largest manufacturer of heavy-duty trucks in North America. Under the Freightliner Corp. LLC umbrella, there are Freightliner Trucks, Sterling Truck Corp., Western Star Trucks, American LaFrance fire apparatus, Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp., and the Alliance parts and services division.

Freightliner is in the midst of a massive restructuring program that, when completed, will shed nearly 18 per cent of its workers, consolidate truck-making capacity and reduce other corporate costs. Its corporate management structure will be completely overhauled in 2002 and several manufacturing facilities will be closed, including a Western Star heavy-duty truck assembly site in Kelowna, B.C.

Freightliner lost nearly $1.20 billion in 2001. It reversed a $900.0 million gain in 2000. Freightliner does not expect to return to the black until early 2003.
